Department of Sociology

About the Department

The Department of Sociology is one of the teaching departments in the College of Social Sciences. The department offers courses on Sociology (SO), Anthropology (AT), Social Work (WK), and Psychology (PY). Since its establishment, the department has been disseminating sociological knowledge and conducting research in different themes including Social policy, Culture, health and population, poverty, religion, community development, gender and family relations, national development/underdevelopment, knowledge, environment, industrial relations, and other related fields.

Entry Requirements

Undergraduate Programmes

Entry requirements in all undergraduate programs in the Department require a minimum of at least two principal passes of the advanced certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) in social science subjects or equivalent qualifications.

Postgraduate Programmes
  • MA in Sociology
    • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 in their undergraduate degrees.
    • Applicants must have a background of sociological theories and social science research methodology.
  • MPH
    • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 in their undergraduate degrees
  • PhD Sociology
    • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 in their postgraduate degrees
    • Applicants must have a background of sociological theories and social science research methodology.

Courses Mapping

Students are required to take all the Core courses as indicated for each specialization. Students may choose additional Optional courses from the list provided as long as the student does not exceed the maximum number of required credits per semester.
